We start our trips in the prefecture of Serres from, our homeplace, Kerkini lake. Kerkini Lake is located in the northwestern part of the Prefecture of Serres about 100 km from Thessaloniki and approximately 40km from the borders of Promachonas. The Lake is an ancient habitat that received intervention in 1932 for irrigation needs. It is flanked by dense riparian forests and mountains which create a unique natural beauty. It is a wintering shelter for many species of birds, many of which are endangered or are found in very small populations.

On the banks of the Lake, we find the last populations of water buffalos. Scientists have described the Lake as one of the few areas showing so much biodiversity and ecological phenomena. It is protected by the "Ramsar" Convention and it is under the European network "Natura 2000”. 


Rupel fortress is a historical monument  at the north border of Central Macedonia. Visitors can have guided tours at  the fortification gallery which is open to the public. To get to Rupel fortress you can take the the Sidirokastro-Promachonas national road and turn right before the Promachonas Customs at the marble memorial of John Metaxas. At the top of the hill, you will see the building SOUND and LIGHT on your left hand. There you will watch an audiovisual twenty minute presentation of Battle of the Fortress. There is also a small museum, which operates  during the celebration of the Battle of the  Fortress . To your right, there is Pavilion for Visitors, where you can relax by the fireplace and  enjoy the hospitality of the soldiers in the fortress unit. 


Alistrati cave is located fifty kilometers southeast of Serres near the Village of  Alistrati.  The cave became known  in May 1975 when Alistrati Community sent a relevant document to  the Speleological Society. The size and rare beauty of the cave attracts not only speleologists, paleontologists, geologists and explorers but every single visitor who wishes to admire a masterpiece of nature. The surface of the cave covers 25,000 m2 and in many parts there are sediments  dating back to approximately 2,000,000 years ago. The cave has very high ceilings, oversized stalactites, eccentrics, stalactites and enormous pillars which form dams and canals. The length of the known primary and secondary alleys is about 3 km. Cave-dweller organizations such myriopoda and bats can be found inside. The temperature is stable (at approximately 20o C) and humidity is close to 75%.The cave is a tourist attraction nationally and internationally and is visited by more than 100,000 people per year.


The museum of Amfipoli is located in the archaeological site of ​​the ancient city of Amphipolis, which was a historic city in the region of Macedonia in the 5th century BC. Τhe museum houses the material remains of the ancient city covering a time span from the prehistoric times down to the Byzantine period. The location of the museum is associated with the Spartan officer Brasidas, who was buried outside the walls of Amphipolis in 422 BC.
